Why does the United States adopt a flavour of Direct Democracy instead of the current Pseudo-Democracy?

The system is not the problem; those who were expected to maintain it (the public) failed to do their jobs. Democracy in any form is no protection against tyranny and no guarantee of success. Direct democracy tends to impose the tyranny of mob rule.
